This collection is a powerful journey of reclaiming and defending individual space, celebrating the working-class mining culture of Marmato, Colombia, where designer Mateo Velásquez grew up. The collection challenges imperialist systems and cultural stereotypes, offering a fresh perspective on traditional masculinity through the lens of contemporary fashion.

Marmato, a gold mining town in northwest Colombia, is a place of rich history and cultural diversity. Drawing from this cultural heritage and his childhood memories, Mateo Velásquez envisions a society free from patriarchal, sexist, and homophobic constraints, positively impacting marginalized generations.

Concept: BAREQUER

“BAREQUER” refers to workers involved in small-scale, artisanal gold extraction. These individuals often work independently or in small groups, using traditional methods to mine gold. In Marmato, the dusty, cracked buildings line unpaved streets, symbolizing the laborious yet hopeful quest for gold, which represents the divine and the ultimate treasure.

Gold mining in Marmato teaches patience and perseverance. The precious metal reveals itself only when the mountain wills it, making the find all the more rewarding amidst the heat and darkness of the mines.

Creative Vision

Directed by Mateo Velásquez, who was born in Colombia and raised between Madrid and London, VELASQUEZ blends his hybrid upbringing and queer experiences to challenge social norms and explore contemporary versions of traditional menswear. Mateo, with a master’s degree in menswear design from the University of Westminster, first gained international acclaim at the Hyeres Festival, organized by LVMH in collaboration with Chanel and Chloé, following his debut at Madrid Fashion Week in Fall/Winter 2021.
