“Fashion is very much an art form not in spite of the body, but because of it,” says Andrew Bolton, OBE, curator in charge of the Costume Institute. And this year’s exhibition, “Costume Art,” seeks not just to address this tantalizingly complex issue, but to explore it in all its many facets. The central thesis is as simple as it is thrilling: pair existing artworks with corresponding garments or accessories and let your synapses fire. The very layout of the show—broken into sections that move from Biblical nudity to the au courant idea of body diversity to the ways in which we’ve long used clothes not merely to adorn but to subvert and distort the body—indicates just how richly drawn this subject is and why it’s mesmerized artists since time immemorial.
Sinéad Burke, CEO of Tilting the Lens, emphasizes how this exhibit highlights bodies that have traditionally been overlooked, and as someone with a physical disability, she is among those featured. Her body has been memorialized in the exhibition as a custom mannequin, alongside model and musician Aariana Rose Philip, transforming their presence into a lasting part of the narrative around representation, fashion, and identity.
Additionally, this exhibition will be the first in the costume department’s new home, the Conde M. Nast Galleries. Once relegated to a modest 4,500-square-foot space in the museum’s basement, the department will now take flight in a grand, 12,000-square-foot display room on the ground floor, just off the central Great Hall. It is, says Max Hollein, the museum’s director, a symbol of how important clothing has become to The Met’s mission in exploring the many facets of art in the modern age. “We collect paintings, sculptures, textiles, arms and armor, but especially all the fashion,” he says. “And we want to make sure that it’s understood that fashion is a fantastic form of art.”

Emma’s acting skills are indeed surreal. And as the casting director said it never felt like acting. They are truly majestic!

The entire cast is phenomenal but i will FOREVER praise the casting of Alicent and Aegon bc i don’t think it was intentional but Olivia and Tom look EXTREMELY similar like it literally looks like Aegon stole his mom’s entire face

Everyone praises Ewan, he had lots of promotion and you’d think he has a really big role in the show and yet… He is barely on screen. Literally 1-2 minutes each episode with almost no dialogue or development. It’s so strange, I don’t understand this. Why would you waste such an interesting character with cool character design and his talented actor? Can someone please ask Ryan Condal?

They’re obsessed with the rhaenicent dynamic. It needs to stop. Characters like aegon aemond helaena jace baela rhaena should have way more screen time. It should be an ensemble cast like GOT was but they are obsessed with rhaenyra alicent, and daemon, although his season two storyline is also boring. Basically the writing is bad and that’s why certain characters aren’t getting the focus they should be getting.

@Em35nyc this is so ridiculous. I wish the showrunners and HBO would get more backlash on this so they’d actually change something. They don’t let their younger cast shine and only focus on the older generation characters who don’t even do anything most of the time and the second season dragged so much. It’s just so boring and annoying that I stopped watching.

Great video, but why is this lady shocked by Milly’s apartment? Why is she judging her?
@Em35nyc
August 2, 2024 at 3:32 pm
Yeah kinda weird/rude. There’s a video Milly did a few months giving a house tour of her mom’s place in Australia, that must be where she did the audition based on the descriptions here and in the house tour video.

Tbh, I’m really interested how does one become a casting director, like what route do you have to take to get to be one, to be able to choose and literally give an actor a carrier and legacy if you hit the jackpot

I wish they gave more screen time to ewan. I got invested in the show because of his character Aemond and how captivating his performance is. Brilliant casting nevertheless ????????????

Emmas’ easily my favourite actor on this show and that’s saying a lot since almost all these actors are so talented.

Ewan steals the show every time he’s on screen even without speaking. it’s a shame that he has so little screen time even though Aemond is the most interesting character and the one who is carrying the whole season on his back with just few scenes. they destroyed the whole dynamic of team black vs team green, now is everyone vs aemond. at least give him more screen time, he deserves it

I always thought that storyboard artists, costume designers, concept artists and prop departments dont get enpugh credit and now im going to add casting directors to that list. All of these are immensely important for a show to succeed.
