‘Dune’ Director Denis Villeneuve Breaks Down the Gom Jabbar Scene | Vanity Fair

Published

on

In this episode of “Notes on a Scene,” ‘Dune’ director Denis Villeneuve breaks down the scene where Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) is challenged to a test, the Gom Jabbar, to see if his humanity will overcomes his animal impulses. A poisoned needle is held to his neck to incentivize him to complete the test. Denis explains how he built such a tense scene with the layering of an ancient aesthetic and visual effects.

See DUNE in theaters beginning Friday, October 22.

Please have more of Denis breaking down his own imagination, intention and visual for the movie. It gives me a more in-depth understanding of what I’m watching. I havent read the book, I love the movie and push through watching it because of the casting (Timothy, Rebecca, Jason, Zendaya.. under one roof.. common. you dont get anything better than that) I must timothy acting blows me away.. his eyes in this scene.. I havent seen anything powerful like that in a long time. Bravo to Dune.

This movie will be nominated for multiple Academy Awards. It’s so epic and so well crafted. The only downside is that it ended too soon at 2 1/2 hours.

Denis is so humble and self aware. Just saw the movie. It’s not a movie, it’s a universe that envelopes you. Incredible achievement.

I wonder what Brian Herbert thinks of this movie. I’d like to think that if Frank were still with us, he’d be crying tears of joy.

So much attention to detail! Why do I get the sense that I’m missing most of what’s happening on the screen whenever I watch any of his films (even after multiple viewings…)?

    Le grand manipulateur à l’oeuvre!

The way the voice was portrayed in the movie in my opinion feels exactly how it should as it is described.

Villeneuve’s Dune is a s**t film. Lynch’s 1984 original is not perfect, but the cast and acting are sublime, the set design and art direction are exquisite. This 2021 version looks like a bad derivative rehash and with a really poor choice for the main actors. Timothee Chalamet is a joke, too frail and woke-looking for the part. Oscar Isaac looks like a villain, not a nobleman. Rebecca Ferguson has zero appeal in comparison with Francesca Annis. Zendaya is a complete eyesore and has none of the charisma and beauty of Sean Young. Completely abysmal.

this film was beautiful, truly a shakespearean drama in a sci-fi setting. denis and the entire cast and crew did a spectacular job and—for me, at least—achieved as close to perfection as you can get. i’m soooo excited for the rest of the series!!

He’s my favorite director so I went into this movie knowing nothing about Dune and not having watched any trailers for the first time ever. I watched it last night and went to bed thinking it was an 8/10 and woke up thinking it’s a 9/10. I feel there’s some things he definitely could’ve done a better job explaining and would’ve made the movie better for it. Still I can’t wait to read the series now and really hope we get a sequel.
