i stopped watching after the first season ended. i just couldn’t continue. i watched this show exclusively for sean bean, and it turns out GoT lost its drag force for me after this scene.

I have never felt the absence of a character in a tv show like Ned Stark. When I finished season one, a part of me thought I couldn’t carry on with the show, because my favourite, and I assume most of the audiences favourite character, the main character had been killed off. This scene was fantastic and completely took me by surprise.

Just goes to show that storytelling matters most. The frozen lake battle was a technological and visual triumph, but it was greatly weakened by bad storytelling. This scene will live forever because of the power of the characters and story built. Directing was still great. It didn’t need a huge budget to make an impact.

Personally i find it ridiculous they’d do the rock being thrown at the head in CGI. Foam rubber is cheap and you can make it look great just by the actors reaction. If anything this breakdown proves that they’re relying too much on CG. Practical is always the way to go if it can be done. Save CG for things that are so big and unreal. The best cgi is when can’t even tell it’s being used.

Another great thing about the character Ned stark is that he is the only character that keeps living even though he has been dead for the longest time. That rarely happens, yes you see orphan children holding their parents in a great light often in fiction but not so often does that translate into real life. The fans hold just as much respect and love for Ned as his children do. So even if they killed him in the beginning they didn’t really erase the character. And if they had not killed him at that time, there is a high probability of them ruining his character and the affect it has on people. Ned is the good guy, he always does the honorable thing, he is just ruler and kind father, all his people look up to him, yet he never loses his head (no pun intended). He is brave in the face of death and we all want to be Ned Stark. Which is why we can’t forget him.
