I am a professional cinematographer, and what Beverly says at 2.49 is absolutely, completely not true; it’s clearly a fabrication to portray victimhood and generate sympathy. She says that “the actual film that the photographer shot did not have a spectrum color for people of color”. Then she goes on to say that film stocks were crafted more specifically for blonde hair/blue eyed models. It’s ersatz, a complete canard.

Kodak film stocks of the 70s (the most popular manufacturer of film, vs. Ilford) were generally ISO 64 – 400 (both Ektacrhome and color negative), though professional shoots typically utilized the lower ISOs for tighter grain that could then be magnified for print and advertising. And common motion picture stocks like Kodak 5247 (used in commercials and movies), whether Tungsten or Daylight balanced color temperatures, had no way photochemically of differentiating, or reacting more favorably to different skin tones; the stocks essentially capture the images that the lenses direct onto the plane of the film. She makes it sound like there was some nefarious conspiracy in Rochester by Kodak chemical engineers. Ridiculous.

Of course, make-up options might have been more limited for darker skin tones at that time, but that is a different issue entirely. And most likely driven by pure economics, not racism.

It is a shame that our culture allows these flagrant perpetuations of false oppression to fill and clog our collective imaginations. False, invented statements like this should be flatly condemned.

The whispers and shade in the aftermath of her cover, is a sad reality. Such a groundbreaking, beautiful moment and still no room to shine with applause. Well I’m glad she’s been able to maintain an incredible legacy and didn’t let that get her down. Wonderful feature.
