“Scwontz!” In this episode of Off the Cuff (that nearly goes off the rails) “A Complete Unknown” stars Timothée Chalamet and Elle Fanning, answer a series of rapid-fire questions. What’s their favorite Bob Dylan lyric? Do they prefer acting or singing? When did they first meet each other? Do they like vinyl or streaming better? Timothée and Elle also rap about Doechii, Chappell Roan, and underground hip hop sensation Lil Timmy Tim.

1 thing I like about WALL-E that not enough people bring up is that if you isolate the parts with just WALL-E the story works, but if you isolate the parts with just the Captain the story also still works. It’s 1 of the few Disney films that actually does a subplot that is just as interesting as the main plot.

1 thing I’ve often wondered about WALL-E is how many humans were on the Axiom? We’re never given an exact number, but it’s gotta be in the 1,000s if not 10,000 after 700 years and multiple generations being raised on it. Also, it’s suggested early in the film that there were other cruise ships out there besides the Axiom, yet they aren’t shown returning to Earth at the end.

If futurist study the future, why aren’t people who study the past called pastist?

The past is history, ie; historians. Try to be smart next time you “try to be smart”.

11:40 there is a phone for everyone on the planet etc, but they are not all in use all at once, and remember 1/3rd of them are inactive just due to the world sleep cycle, and of those 2/3rds left only a fraction are being used I think its a doable computing problem. 12:30 this goes back to Replicants being the most accurate future AI Machines. Start with the human template, manipulate that and use artificial genes and then weave in nanotech and new materials to make something that is biotech. That way it can heal, machines that can’t heal themselves are useless.

A phone is still active unless you take out the battery. I have my phone on “airplane” mode 99% of the time, yet if I have it near my speakers monitors, it will transmit and cause electro-magnetic interference once every 10mins or so. It can be accessed remotely at any time.

19:30 Hal was programmed to obey instructions given to him to the best of it’s ability. He was instructed to keep secret and not reveal the true mission of the Discovery until they reached Jupiter. He was also instructed to complete the mission if the crew was killed. So logically the best way to complete the mission perfectly was to kill the crew and complete the mission itself. That way all mission goals are accomplished. It’s perfect logic, Hal didn’t ‘go mad’ or malfunction.

23:40 this also touches on the film Inception, what most people don’t understand is that the human mind is wired for pattern recognition to a missive degree, almost to savant levels. That’s where the constellations come from, seeing things in the clouds etc, the cool by product is that human memory doesn’t need to be comprehensive; it just needs to be nudged along a path and our minds would fill in the rest of the information. In a way modern VR is overkill, but the mind into a relaxed, suggestive state and then use just the right stimulus to have the mind create its own environments.

Oh this is perfect, especially when you consider the algorithim used by the UK government for exam results and in a sense determining people’s futures and roles.

How does one get this job? Because I’ve always been into tech and scifi ever since I was a kid (I’m 43) and predicted loads of stuff that’s come to fruition. I’ll charge half of what she does.
